State election officials say California voters cast their ballots in record numbers on election day. Nearly 10 million California voters cast ballots.

Much of the credit for the record turnout goes to the high rate of absentee voting. More than three million absentee ballots were requested for this election. According to Secretary of State Bill Jones, about 56 percent of all eligible Californians voted. That's about 76 percent of registered voters.

Experts speculate that high interest in the presidential contest, along with a number of high profile propositions, spurred the record voting.
