A funnel cloud was spotted over West Sacramento late Wednesday afternoon. Although striking in appearance, it did not touch the ground and did not pose a danger to the community.
The funnel was seen at about 5:40 p.m. It was suspended from a cloud, and the rotation of the funnel was clearly evident. The funnel was the product of unstable air masses that rumbled through the area today, producing heavy rain and gusty winds.
Funnel clouds are spawned by the same processes that produce tornadoes. They are rarely seen in Northern California.
