A number of homeless people used one area of land with lots of trees and bushes as their home. Other people considered the area to be a place of crime. It has been bulldozed.

It took many years to plan the tearing down of this place. It took only minutes to knock it all to the ground.

Police said that this overgrown area protected many homeless people from the sun, wind, rain, and cold weather. It also kept criminal activity from sight. This place was near a school and homes. It had to be bulldozed and cleaned up.

One business owner nearby was glad to see everything torn down. He said that two or three times a week his business would be broken into. He also said that all kinds of illegal activities would go on there.

One homeless man said that he likes being outdoors. He thinks that it is safer than staying in a shelter. Another man said that the shelters are too full. A woman stated that she has been waiting more than a year for a room to stay in.

People in charge of the local shelters said that they will find places for these homeless people to sleep for the night. They will probably need more rooms in the future because the city is not done with this project. They are planning to clear even more trees in the city that are thought to provide shelter for the homeless.
