A truck driver crashed his big rig into California’s State Capitol. The driver crashed his truck on purpose. It is said that he wanted to kill himself.

Before truckers can drive they have to be checked out by a doctor. Doctors screen them to make sure that they are in good health. Unfortunately the doctor that screened this man did not see a problem.

Right now nurses, assistants, and chiropractors can give truck drivers permission to drive.
A medical doctor never screened this man. A chiropractor gave him the signature he needed to drive.

A man is trying to change laws about how truck drivers are screened. He wants all truck drivers to be screened only by licensed medical doctors. He also wants them to be checked for mental illness as well as for drug and alcohol problems.

Some people believe that this accident might not have happened if the driver’s background would have been checked better. If the laws are changed to screen truck drivers better it might keep accidents like this from happening again. It is hoped that changing the laws will keep everyone safer.
